Southern Thailand in 8 days with G Adventures

G Adventures tour

When I first started thinking about travelling I just didn’t know where to begin. I knew I wanted to travel around Southeast Asia, but deciding exactly where to begin my adventure was a little difficult. Fortunately for me, I came across a 9-day tour with G Adventures. We began in Bangkok and travelled south through to Khao Sok, Koh Samui and Koh Tao.

Now I’ve never travelled with a tour group before so I was just hoping I’d get on with the people I was travelling with. To be honest I shouldn’t have been worried as the whole group were great! For the next week or so, they became by travelling family.

Day 1

Today was the first day of the tour – after having spent 2 nights in Bangkok by myself I was very much looking forward to speaking to people and making some friends! After initial introductions with everyone in the group at the Bangkok Centre Hotel we headed out for some dinner and then Khao San Road… which was just insane! There is so much to see and do there from drinking and dancing, to eating a scorpion or even watching a ping pong show.

Day 2

After an eventful night out on the town it was time for some culture. We all had free time to ourselves during the day

before we had to meet back at the hotel in the evening to get an overnight train to Khao Sok.

Me and two lovely girls from Australia, Caitlin and Elle spent the day immersed in beautiful surroundings at the temple of Wat Pho.

The temple is famously known for its reclining Buddha. It’s definitely worth a visit.

Day 3

We woke up on day three of our adventure on an overnight train to Khao Sok. The sleep was surprisingly decent. I must have been so tired and just knocked right out because I can’t even remember falling asleep.

We eventually arrived at Khao Sok National Park which was a real natural beauty.

Khao Sok National Park

A few of us went with a park guide on a 3 hour hike – despite the major sweat, it was pretty amazing. Don’t quote me on this but apparently it’s one of the oldest rainforests in the world!

Day 4

Up early we headed for Koh Samui. We had to get a bus from Khao Sok to Surat Thani and from there we got on a short ferry over to Koh Samui.

As soon as we arrived at our hotel we all dropped our bags off and went down to the beach to soak up some sun.

Day 5

There’s a range of things to do on the island of Koh Samui. The majority of us just explored the beaches. I even got a Thai massage on the beach. I went for the stronger strength massage – and was completely broken by the end of it. Despite the pain, it was so relaxing that I even fell asleep.

There’s a range of other activities you could do including: Ang Thong Marine Park island hopping tour, kayaking, a cookery class, or a jeep tour around the island.

We ended the day on the island of Koh Phangan – at a full moon party of course.

Day 6

Today we travelled to Koh Tao and oh my, it was the worst journey I’ve ever experienced. One of the girls on the tour group summed it up pretty well. Renee said something along the lines of “To get to paradise you’ve got to make the journey through hell”. It was a pretty hellish journey and you can read about it here in my previous post.‘The Worst Day So Far’

When we arrived in Koh Tao it was chucking it down so we didn’t really do much. We were all feeling a bit weak and struggling after the bumpy boat journey to the island. I went for a run in the pouring rain, but that was about it.

Day 7

Waking up on a beautiful island and looking out of the window to non-stop rain is not what I was expecting to see. If it wasn’t for the beautiful plants and gardens outside our hotel room I could have easily woken up and thought I was back in grey, rainy England.

Today we were all supposed to spend a full day snorkelling – now for a person like me who is not a strong swimmer and was still feeling a bit rough from the choppy waters yesterday, I decided not to go out and snorkel. Instead I spent the day with two of the other girls on the tour, Jenny and Nikki, who like me, were also put off from snorkelling by the awful weather.

Funnily enough the rain did stop for a bit and the rest of the gang who did go out snorkelling said they had an amazing time.

Day 8

So the tour begins and ends in Bangkok, but for me I decided to stay in the south of Thailand a little longer. While the rest of the group headed back towards Bangkok I stayed in Koh Tao for 2 more nights… hoping to see the island in some sunshine. It was a good shout as well because on the two extra days I was there, the sun came out to play.

Bye bye G Adventures crew

Day 9

The tour would have finished today but I stayed on in Koh Tao.

So would I do it again?

Yes – in a heartbeat! For me the idea of travelling completely alone was a bit scary. Super amazing, but terrifyingly scary. So doing something with a tour group first to help me settle and make friends was the best decision I’ve made. The tour goes so quickly and you get to see a lot in such a short space of time.

I’ve got to say a massive thank you to our G Adventures tour group CEO Sombat, who was just brilliant. From start to finish he made sure everyone was happy with the travel plans, kept everyone safe and was just so friendly and helpful. He was a really fun tour group CEO always making jokes and keeping the groups spirits high.

I think if you’re after a short break and want to meet other likeminded, outgoing, thrill-seeking people definitely go for it. Alternatively if you’re like me and want to join a tour to start your adventure – do it too! It’ll give you a taster of what you like/don’t like, places you want to see more of and where you want to head over to next.
