How To Overcome Failure

People fail forward to success

You might have seen my previous post where I spoke about failing my driving test 10 times. If you’ve not watched the video, go and check it out. I’ve failed numerous times and in doing so, I’ve come to realise that failure is inevitable if we want to succeed. Although this is easy for me to say now, I appreciate it might not be as easy for everyone else.

I believe the ability to overcome and pass failure makes the difference between those who eventually reach success and those who don’t.

So if you’re feeling low and struggling, here are my top tips to help you overcome failure.

1. Failure isn’t a waste of time

When we fail, we might think we’ve been wasting our time on something that will never happen. But this shouldn’t be the mindset we have if we want to succeed.

The fact that we’ve given it a go in the first place is much better than doing nothing at all. Don’t regret NOT doing something. The regret should be in not NOT doing something.

2. Failure brings wisdom

Failure doesn’t come without a reason. It’s there to give you the wisdom you need to succeed. Each failure you encounter will increase your knowledge and bring you one step closer to reaching your success. If you come out failing with this mindset, you’ll begin to see failure differently. You’ll start to see failure as an opportunity to teach yourself something new and add value to your life.

Learn from the failure
Each failure you encounter will increase your knowledge.

3. Learn from the failure.

Like I mentioned in the previous point, failure brings you wisdom. But how much wisdom you get actually depends on your ability to understand it. View your failure as valuable feedback. Perhaps it’s something you can use to improve upon, rather than a setback.

Don’t waste the opportunity to learn from your mistakes and failures. Without acknowledging your failures, you might waste a lot more time and end up repeating the same mistakes again.

4. You could be one step away from success

When we’ve failed over and over again, the thought of giving up may be tempting. But what if someone told you, you were just one step away from success? Can you risk wasting that long journey you’ve been on when you could just be one small step away? I failed my driving test 10 times before I passed. If I quit after the 10th attempt I would never have overcome that failure.

What if someone told you, you were just one step away from success?

5. Don’t let failure kill your enthusiasm

Whilst trying to overcome failure, do so with the same enthusiasm you began with when you first started. This may be difficult and seem almost impossible if you’ve failed repeatedly, but your mindset is everything. By staying enthusiastic, or at least trying your best to, your effort will become more powerful. A way to maximise enthusiasm is to keep in mind that you’re one step closer to success because of the lessons you’ve already learnt through failure.

Aim high if you want to overcome failure
Spend the time to visualise your dreams and goals.

6. Aim high

Always have your goals and what you want to achieve in mind. Dream big, have high ambitions and spend the time to visualise them.  Be passionate and enthusiastic about what you want to achieve and imagine yourself once you’ve achieved this success. Visualise all the obstacles you’ve encountered whilst on this path to success. Think about your ‘why’. Why do you want this success? Why is this success so important to you?

7. Be confident

Don’t be afraid to turn your dreams into a reality. It can happen, you just need to have that confidence in yourself. You’ve got to believe in yourself. Not just once or twice, but every day. You’ve got to believe it in every part of your life. Whilst you’re eating and even dreaming. You can do it!

Keep moving forward to overcome failure
Write out your end goal and the steps you will take to reach this.

8. Keep moving forward

It’s important to think about and process your failure, but it’s more important to learn to let go. It’s easy to get stuck in the repetitive thoughts of failure. And if this happens you’ll essentially limit your growth towards success. To move forward, you should make a rough plan. Spend some time to sit down and write out your end goal and steps you will take to reach this. Once written out, moving forward will be easier.

So these are my tips on overcoming failure. Remember, just because you may have failed once, twice, maybe ten times, it doesn’t mean you’re going to fail the next time as well.

If you keep moving forward, if you take action, learn from your mistakes, be open to change, keep your energy and enthusiasm up, you will achieve success. Envision failure as something that is temporary. Something that will pass instead of something permanent. By keeping this optimistic attitude you’ll soon be on your way to success.
