How To Cope With Loneliness When Travelling

Despite meeting new people every day and only ever being a phone call or WhatsApp away from friends or family, sometimes travelling solo gets lonely. Here are some tips to help you combat that loneliness.

Yes, you meet great people from all walks of life, and some of those blossom into the most amazing friendships, but when it’s time to go your separate ways and say goodbye, dealing with loneliness can be challenging.

But its not just the goodbyes that can be problematic, sometimes it’s difficult to even find people you can connect with. People

So here are my tips on how to deal with loneliness.

Try something new 🤓

Now that you’ve said goodbye to your friends don’t just sit there all alone, feeling sorry for yourself, wondering when or if you’ll ever see them again. Instead, get out of your comfort zone. Do that thing you’ve always wanted to do, but you’ve just never got around to doing.

Stop and smell the roses lavender 🌸

Spend some time breathing in the fresh, open air. Get yourself outdoors. Perhaps go for a walk, explore your surroundings or spend time with nature. It’s been scientifically proven that fresh air makes you feel good. In fact, smelling fresh air, plants and flowers is said to decrease stress and increase happiness levels. Flowers like lavender can lower anxiety and increase your mood, while taking in the scent of pine trees can put those stress levels at bay.

Speak to people 🆘

Simply opening up to someone you barely know and talking truthfully can be the best remedy to loneliness. Sometimes the best guidance can come from people who barely knows anything about us. There’s no judgement; simply honesty and openness. If you’ve got something niggling away on your mind and you have no one to turn to, don’t be afraid to seek help from an outsider.

Put yourself out there 📱

Small talk can get exhausting for me now. Within minutes of speaking to someone new I’m quite often bored unless we have something in common. And with everyone always on their phones it’s now easier than ever to meet someone you can have a proper chat with. Get on Facebook, join travel groups, or community event groups near you. Bumble and Meet Up are also other great apps to meet people who have similar interests as you. The latter app allows you to choose what interests including pets, food, fitness and everything else in between. You can then join nearby groups, meet with people, (in real life) and get chatting about the things that interest you.

Pamper yourself 💆🏻

There’s nothing better, or perhaps more relaxing than taking yourself off to get pampered. Relax while you lay back getting a massage, or perhaps a hair cut or mani-pedi.

When you take care of yourself and look your best you’re more like to feel more confident. With that confidence you’ll be able to conquer anything you want. Loneliness who? 💁🏻

Just because you might be alone in the physical sense, it doesn’t mean you have to be lonely. Spend time doing the things you enjoy and don’t feel guilty for investing time in yourself to be alone. When its time to say goodbye to friends, don’t put any extra pressure on yourself to find new ones. Make the most of your ‘me time’, concentrate on yourself and everything else will soon fall into place.
